The Ursa, 2124 Bancroft Way Multifamily Residential
Designer: Studio KDA
Berkeley needs beds near campus, and this new residential building deserves a citation for re-use of a single-family home site downtown.
In addition to the BDA’s regular awards, the jury applauds two residential projects for the inventiveness with which they have put land assembly and construction methods to use both in providing additional housing, and creating examples that future developers and architects would do well to follow.
Through a skillful floor plan, a narrow through-lot yielded 50 compact student apartments on 5 floors. At the ground level, a setback resolves the various restrictions on building form while creating a welcoming entry. Similarly, step-backs in the facade acknowledge the two adjacent structures as well as the increased views available as the floors ascend. And the house that once occupied part of the site? It was moved two blocks and restored to hold 5 apartments.
