Boats, Bikes, Docks, Designs and Decisions: Update on the Berkeley Pier and Ferry Terminal

Presenters: Scott Ferris is the Director of the Parks, Recreation & Waterfront Department at the City of Berkeley.  Roger Miller is a Senior Management Analyst / Project Manager with the Parks, Recreation & Waterfront Department and is supporting the Project Management for the Pier-Ferry Project.

Please join us for a presentation by Scott Ferris and Roger Miller, City of Berkeley staff, on the Berkeley Pier-Ferry Project.  This update includes an overview of the Pier / Breakwater structure which provides both recreation opportunities and access to the new, zero-emission ferry terminal, as well as the many landside elements, including bike lanes, trails, parking and restroom improvements.   Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.

As many members know, the Berkeley Municipal Pier was closed in July, 2015 due to visually observed structural problems on the underside of the concrete decking and pilings. In 2017, the City retained a structural engineering firm to assess the problem and develop a range of solutions and costs. In 2018, Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) initiated discussions with City regarding the possibility of new ferry service at the Berkeley Waterfront. During those initial discussions WETA and City staff realized that it could be cost-effective to investigate a single pier that would provide two uses – ferry service and public recreation. Since 2019, WETA and the City have engaged in collaborative planning for a dual-purpose pier.

Location: AIA East Bay Conference Room, Brower Center, 2150 Allston Way #310, Berkeley, CA 94709.

Many thanks to AIA East Bay for hosting this event!
